How to Start a Blog for Your Small Business

You’ve probably had that moment.
You’re sipping your tea or stirring a pot of soup on the stove and thinking,
“I really need to start that blog.”

You’ve got stories to tell. Wisdom to share.
And let’s be honest—social media alone isn’t cutting it anymore. Algorithms come and go. But your blog? That’s your home base.

Whether you’re a maker, a mama, a slow-living entrepreneur, or a business owner who sells hand-poured candles, natural goods, baked treats, or thoughtful services—this post will walk you through how to blog for your brand in a way that feels sustainable, strategic, and totally you.

Why Blogging Still Works (Especially for Brands Like Yours)

Let’s skip the hype and get real.

Blogging isn’t dead—it’s just misunderstood.
In a world that moves too fast, your blog becomes the place where people can slow down and connect. Where they can learn from you, trust you, and buy from you—without needing a trending audio clip or a 17-hour screen addiction.

Here’s what blogging really does:

  • Builds long-term Google traffic that keeps growing
  • Shares your heart, values, and story without interruption
  • Gently guides readers toward your products, services, or newsletter
  • Builds trust with thoughtful, helpful content your audience can come back to again and again

If you’ve ever Googled “how to start a blog for your small handmade business” or “how to write blog posts that attract the right customers,” this is your starting point.

What to Blog About When You’re a Maker or Creative Biz Owner

This is where most people get stuck. But here’s the good news:
You don’t need a degree in journalism to write a blog post that connects. You just need to teach what you know and speak to the people you want to help.

Here are blog post ideas that work beautifully for simple living brands:

  • Why I Started My Homestead Skincare Line (and What I’ve Learned)
  • 5 Herbal Ingredients I Love (and Why They’re in My Products)
  • A Day in the Life of a Small-Batch Candle Maker
  • How to Make Your Kitchen More Eco-Friendly
  • The Story Behind Our Holiday Baking Traditions

Focus on your behind-the-scenes, your values, your creative process, your best-selling products, and your seasonal shifts.

And if you sell products or services? Let each blog post be a stepping stone to the sale—not in a pushy way, but in a come sit with me while I show you kind of way.

Mid-Blog Pick-Me-Up: My Blueberry Syrup Latte Recipe (No Coffee Needed)

Whenever I sit down to plan or write blog content, I need a cozy beverage.
Lately, it’s been this dreamy blueberry syrup latte made with Dandy Blend (a coffee alternative with roasted dandelion and chicory that still feels rich and grounding).

This one’s toddler-approved, full of flavor, and the perfect ritual for sitting down to write.

Shayna’s Blueberry Syrup Latte (No Coffee Needed)

For the syrup:

  • 1 1/2 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Tiny pinch of cinnamon or cardamom if you’re fancy

Simmer all ingredients together until the blueberries burst and it thickens slightly (about 10 mins). Strain through a fine mesh sieve and store in the fridge for up to 5 days.

To make the latte:

  • 1 cup milk of choice (I use whole)
  • lots of ice
  • 1-2 tsp Dandy Blend
  • 2 tbsp blueberry syrup (or to taste)

Add ice and the milk, mix in Dandy Blend, and add the syrup. Froth if you want extra joy. Sip while batching blog content or dreaming up your next launch.

How Blogging Supports a Sustainable Business

If you’ve chosen a slower lifestyle and a purpose-led brand, you probably don’t want to hustle 24/7 to be seen.

That’s the magic of blogging.

Every post you write becomes a little digital garden plot that keeps growing while you’re offline, baking sourdough, or packaging orders.

Blogging helps your simple living brand by:

  • Increasing organic search traffic (people find you while Googling)
  • Giving you content to repurpose on social media and email
  • Educating people on your process and mission
  • Building your brand in a gentle, intentional way
